Matthias Grunsky is an internationally working Cinematographer. He is best known for his work on US independent movies.
His work has garnered critical acclaim from THE NEW YORKER, L.A. TIMES, CAHIERS DU CINEMA, FILMMAKER MAGAZINE and VARIETY for his brave camera work, intimate, unshowy lensing, some of the most endearingly daring black and white imagery in recent years and for his unique shot design.
Grunsky has been a steady collaborator of director Andrew Bujalski since his 2001 debut FUNNY HA HA. His most recent work for Bujalski is SUPPORT THE GIRLS, starring Regina Hall. The 16 movies Grunsky has shot so far also include NIGHTS AND WEEKENDS, directed by Joe Swanberg and Greta Gerwig and the musical film SAINTS REST, directed by Noga Ashkenazi. He has also lensed several documentaries, tv movies and series around the world.
For the movie COMPUTER CHESS he got nominated for Best Cinematography at the Film Independent Spirit Awards 2014, for the musical SAINTS REST he won Best Cinematography at the Midwest Independent Film Festival 2019 and for the tv drama DEFIANCE. THREE WOMEN AND THE VOTE he won Best Cinematography at the History Film Fest 2019.
Born in Vienna, Grunsky started his career in filmmaking as a camera assistant on movies and tv series in Austria and Germany. 1998 he attended the American Film Institute in Los Angeles for its two year cinematography program.
Grunsky is a member of the German Society of Cinematographers, BVK.
